Is there such a thing as responsible mining?

Environmental activists and non governmental organizations are known to oppose mining in different parts of the world such as Chile, where mining is rampant, primarily because they claim that it damages the ecosystem. However, mining companies are quick to disprove this by saying that they do responsible mining. Just imagine if they will stop mining for good. There won't be enough precious minerals and stones for our use and the global economy could worsen. We should just strike a balance between development and environment. One should not deteriorate because of the other.
